Van Dijk Admits He’s Not on Saliba’s Level

William Saliba’s impressive performances for Arsenal have caught the attention of many, including Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. The experienced center-back admitted that, at Saliba’s age, he was not at the same level as the Arsenal defender.

Saliba joined Arsenal in 2019, but his potential was initially questioned as he spent three seasons on loan before returning. Since his comeback in the 2022/2023 season, the 23-year-old has proven himself and is now considered one of the best center-backs in the Premier League, playing a crucial role in Arsenal’s title race with Manchester City.

At Saliba’s age, Van Dijk was still developing his career at Southampton and only gained widespread recognition after joining Liverpool. Reflecting on his journey, the 33-year-old Dutchman acknowledged Saliba’s talent: “He’s really making strides right now,” Van Dijk remarked.

“Saliba’s the first player that comes to mind. He’s incredibly solid,” Van Dijk shared on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.

“He’s doing an excellent job, especially with his control and handling of the ball. Honestly, at his age, I wasn’t anywhere near his level, and that’s part of the excitement in football,” he said.

“I like watching other defenders and learning from them. There are so many who are technically gifted on the ball, and there’s always something to learn,” the Liverpool captain added about Saliba.

Since joining Liverpool, Van Dijk has made over 280 appearances and scored 25 goals, playing a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title in 2020 and their Champions League victory in 2019.
